Hafencity: Hamburg’s modern urban development project

The Hafencity in Hamburg is the largest urban development project in Europe within a city area and has been a flagship project of the Hanseatic city since the ground-breaking ceremony in 2001. By 2030, apartments, hotels, shops, recreational facilities, and office spaces are to be built here, which are expected to be used by more than 100,000 people daily upon completion of the Hafencity. The architectural highlight of the modern Hafencity is undoubtedly the new Elbphilharmonie. The concert hall is now completed and a venue for classical concerts with international artists.

The highlights of the Hafencity

A large part of the sights and attractions in the Hafencity are located in the historic Speicherstadt. It is part of the new district and houses, among other things, a large spice museum, the Miniatur Wunderland with its unique landscape for model railways, and the Hamburg Dungeon. The landmark of the new construction project is undoubtedly the Elbphilharmonie, which can be seen well from a greater distance due to its imposing size. Visitors and citizens of the Hanseatic city can get an interesting overview of parts of the area from the ViewPoint on Großer Grasbrook. The observation tower is accessible to interested parties.

The newly created Lohsepark, on the other hand, is idyllic. Spacious green areas, walking paths, and playgrounds offer a quiet break from the otherwise often turbulent everyday life in the city. In addition, the Lohsepark is a practical connection for cyclists who want to get from the city centre to the Hafencity. In good weather, the promenade on Sandtorkai and Kaiserkai invites you to spend leisurely hours. They are located directly at the Traditionsschiffhafen and have been redesigned. Many small cafes have settled here and quickly create a holiday atmosphere when strolling along the quay. By the way, a shopping spree is possible on the Überseeboulevard, where in addition to many shops, some restaurants and bars can also be found.

Discovering the Hafencity on a boat tour

Since the modern Hafencity is completely surrounded by waterways, it can be wonderfully visited from an excursion boat. From the water side, visitors to the city have an unobstructed view of the already completed buildings of the district and the current construction projects. The departure point for passenger ships is the nearby Landungsbrücken.
